Job Description

This position provides leadership and direction for establishing, maintaining, enforcing and advising senior management on current federal and state statutes, rules, policies, procedures, technical memoranda, specifications and standards that are incorporated into the preparation of construction plans. It is responsible for managing all functions of the Design Support Unit in the Office of Technical Support to ensure that the construction plans are completed for project lettings statewide.


This Section Supervisor is responsible for supervising professional and technical personnel to ensure that the objectives of the Department can be accomplished. The employee serves as the technical engineering expert who maintains design support and communications involved in the review and recommended approval of construction plans and ensures compliance with the accepted engineering standards and Department policies for the scheduled project lettings.


The incumbent is a key member of the Design Engineers Group, Final Design Advisory Committee and other forums to assist with development and implementation of design policies and standards for the Department.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Licensure as a professional Civil Engineer with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience, and Interior Design (AELSLAGID). (If obtaining licensure through Comity, a temporary permit from AELSLAGID must be provided to MnDOT HR prior to starting employment.)

AND

Three (3) years of post-registration engineering experience that demonstrates all the following:

  • Experience with highway design and construction plans and practices sufficient to review the proposed construction plans and determine their biddability and adherence to sound engineering practices and Department standards
  • Experience with MnDOT program delivery, procurement methods, state aid procedures, construction and contract administration
  • Experience with MnDOT policies, state statutes and rules, FHWA rules and regulations pertaining to construction plans
  • Experience serving as a project leader or lead worker, demonstrating ability to successfully motivate and direct the work of other professional staff.
