Location: Salem Hospital, 890 Oak Street SE, Salem, Oregon 97301 Department: Pediatrics Position Type: Unscheduled Schedule: Day shift with varying schedule; see details below Your Role with Us Salem Health is seeking a pediatrician to join our hospital-based Pediatric Hospitalist team in an unscheduled capacity, with the potential for expanded hours as our program continues to grow. This position offers a collaborative, patient-centered environment that values teamwork, quality, and compassionate care. Our Pediatric Hospitalist team is part of the Women and Children’s Services Division, providing care for hospitalized children and newborns, including support for approximately 3,400 births annually.
With a Level III NICU staffed by Neonatal Nurse Practitioners and Neonatologists and access to pediatric subspecialists and PICUs in Portland, the team delivers exceptional care to children and families. Shift start times vary: 12‑hour shifts begin at 7:00 am or 7:00 pm; 24‑hour shifts start at 7:00 am; and 8‑hour shifts run from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm (October–March) or 7:00 am to 1:00 pm (April–September). Shifts are evenly distributed across the team.
Pediatric Hospitalist The team includes seven pediatricians working variable 8, 12, or 24‑hour shifts to provide continuous coverage and exceptional care. Salem Health’s Women and Children’s Services Division features a 10‑bed Pediatric Unit, a 26‑bed Mother‑Baby Unit, an 18‑bed Labor and Delivery Unit, and a 27‑bed Level IIIA NICU. What you'll do Provide care for inpatients, including unassigned patients.
Offer consultation services to the Emergency Department. Manage hospital transfers, admissions, and discharges. Care for newborns, 35 weeks and greater.
Collaborate with established practices to support their inpatient care. Contribute to quality improvement projects. Required qualifications Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
Board Certification in Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics or the American Osteopathic Board of Pediatrics (Applicants who are not Board Certified must obtain board certification within five years from completion of the applicable Residency and/or Fellowship program for the privileges requested at Salem Hospital). Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the state of Oregon. Demonstrate experience and current competency to include the provision of inpatient care for at least 12 pediatric patients in the previous two years.
Demonstrate current competency to include the admission and/or provision of patient care for hospital patients, including ED evaluations/admits, in the previous two years. Current unrestricted federal DEA certification. Current BLS and PALS certifications.
