Position: Staff Nurse / GNM – University Dispensary

1. Position Overview:-
The Staff Nurse / GNM posted at the University Dispensary shall be responsible for providing primary nursing care, first aid, and emergency support to students, faculty members, and staff of the university campus. The position supports the Medical Officer in delivering healthcare services to a university population of approximately ------ students and ----- faculty members, ensuring timely medical assistance, health promotion, and proper management of the dispensary facilities.
2. Key Responsibilities:-
A. Clinical Care and Patient Management
- Provide first aid, basic nursing care, and primary health assistance to students, faculty, and staff visiting the dispensary.
- Conduct initial patient assessment, including recording vital signs such as temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation.
- Assist the Medical Officer during patient examination, treatment, and minor procedures.
- Administer medications, injections, dressings, nebulization, and other nursing procedures as prescribed.
- Manage minor illnesses and injuries within the scope of nursing practice.
B. Emergency Care
- Provide immediate nursing care during medical emergencies occurring on the university campus.
- Manage accidents, injuries, fainting episodes, allergic reactions, or sudden illness until medical assistance is available.
- Coordinate referral and transfer of patients to nearby hospitals or medical facilities when required.
C. Dispensary Operations
- Maintain cleanliness, hygiene, and readiness of the university dispensary.
- Maintain first aid kits and emergency equipment within the dispensary.
D. Documentation and Record Maintenance
- Maintain OPD register, treatment records, nursing procedure records with treatment provided, and medication administration records.
- Maintain confidentiality of medical records and patient information.
- Prepare daily or monthly reports of dispensary services as required by the administration.
E. Health Promotion and Preventive Services
- Assist in organising health awareness programs, health camps, and preventive health initiatives within the university.
- Provide health education on hygiene, nutrition, stress management, and communicable disease prevention.
- Support health screening and medical check-up programs conducted by the university.
F. Coordination and Communication
- Coordinate with hostel authorities, university administration, and departments during health-related incidents.
- Communicate with ambulance services and referral hospitals during emergencies.
- Assist in organising health and safety initiatives on campus.
G. Professional and Ethical Responsibilities
- Maintain professional nursing standards, ethics, and patient confidentiality.
- Follow institutional policies, infection control practices, and safety guidelines.
- Participate in training programs, continuing nursing education, and institutional meetings when required.
3. Qualifications & Experience:-
- GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) from a recognised institution.
- Registered Nurse and Midwife (RN & RM) with the State Nursing Council.
Experience
- Preferably 2–3 years of clinical experience in a hospital
- Experience in emergency care or outpatient services will be an added advantage.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong clinical and first aid skills, able to manage emergencies calmly and efficiently independently.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills to interact with students and faculty.
Working Conditions
- The Staff Nurse shall work in the University Dispensary/Health Centre serving a campus population of approximately 18,800 individuals (students and faculty).
- May be required to work in shifts or during university events and emergencies as per institutional requirements.
